How Much is Transmission Repair?

How much is transmission repair?  It all depends on the answers to a lot of questions, such as:

Is it regularly scheduled maintenance, or is it a repair job?
Is it an automatic transmission or a manual one?
Is it under warranty?
What needs to be done? Do you need to check your transmission fluid, or is there something more involved?
And more questions as well.

The answers to these questions are one factor involved in the cost of repairing your transmission.  Some fees such as environmental fees don’t really add too much to your repair bill, while others such as labor charges can make your bill go up.  If you’re just replacing one gear it obviously won’t cost as much as replacing your entire transmission.  Automatic transmissions are usually more complex than manual transmissions are, so they are simply going to cost a bit more.  Another thing that heavily influences the cost of transmission repair is whether your warranty will cover it.

Transmission Repairs Under Warranty

Some transmission repairs won’t cost you a thing, if you have the right sort of warranty that is.  Transmission repairs under warranty can be all but free, to costing you a bit, depending on your coverage.  Some warranties cover a transmission repair at 100% because it is part of your car or truck’s power train assembly.  Sometimes with extended service warranties, you have to pay a copay that can range from $25 to $100.  How do you know if your transmission is covered?  Read your warranty carefully and if necessary contact your provider.  Above all else, don’t panic.  Sometimes, something as simple as replacing your transmission fluid can solve about 60% of all transmission problems.  Why? Well, like motor oil, transmission fluid helps to lubricate the parts of your transmission, just as motor oil helps your car’s engine parts to work well together.  If transmission fluid gets burned or too gummy, it can cause problems with your transmission.

So remember, if you take care of your car, it will take care of you.  So, check your owner’s manual, and carry out the regularly scheduled transmission maintenance it will need.  That way, you can conceivably have control over how much your transmission repair is going to cost you.
