A four wheel drive vehicle has four main components, and no it’s not the wheels.  Any four wheel drive vehicle has:  a rear differential, the front differential, the automatic transmission of course, and the transfer case.   There may be other components such as locking hubs and certain electronic components that are designed to make use of the terrain’s traction.

Transfer case repair in Mesa is necessary for your transfer case, which is a very hard working component.  A transfer case transfers  the power between the front and rear axles on a four-wheel-drive car. It serves a different purposes than say a differential or an automatic transmission.

What a Transfer Case Does

While your vehicle’s front and rear differentials balance speed between the inside and outside wheels, a transfer case balances speed between the front two and the rear two wheels.  A transfer case is usually a set of gears, though sometimes its just a coupling joint filled with a viscous fluid.  Whatever the type of transfer case it is, they serve the same exact purpose:  they allow an all-wheel drive system to function no matter what the surface is.  In addition, some transfer cases also have a low range, due to an additional set of gears.  Having an extra gear ratio  allows any four wheel drive vehicle fitted with it extra torque and a super-slow output speed.

If you have a four wheel drive vehicle, your vehicle has different maintenance requirements than a two wheel drive car, and all of the components are extremely complex.  Like any vehicle component, you need to regularly maintain your transfer case as well.  In our next article on transfer case repair, we will cover maintenance schedules as well as symptoms of transfer cases going bad.
