A key difference between an automatic transmission and a manual transmission is how many times you shift gears.  As a rule, if you have an automatic transmission, you usually shift gears about three times every time you go for a drive.  You shift into reverse when you back out of a driveway, garage, or a parking spot, shift into drive or overdrive if you are driving, and shift it into park when you have reached your destination.  For higher graded hills, you may have to shift into low gear or 2nd gear, but that’s about it.

With a manual transmission, you shift each time you increase speed.  You also shift gears when you park and reverse.  As to why you should know how to drive with a standard transmission or stick shift, according to the Art of Manliness site:

Why You Should Learn How to Drive Stick

You never know when you’ll need to know how. Has your friend become inebriated and you need to drive him and his old Ford “three on tree” Bronco home? Do you need to borrow a friend’s car, and the only one available has a manual transmission? What about renting a car while abroad? Manual transmission cars are much more common internationally than in the US, so automatics are not always available, and if they are, are much more expensive.

Knowing how to drive stick means you’ll never be caught flat, clutch-shy-footed, in a pinch. A man who knows how to drive a standard transmission car can also easily drive an automatic, but the reverse isn’t true. Better to know it and not need it, than need it and not know it. [READ MORE]

In the city, an automatic transmission is king.  It’s a lot easier to drive when you don’t have to keep shifting up or down.  However, in the country, a stick shift is a pure pleasure to drive, as it adds to the whole driving experience.

Which is More Reliable: Automatic or Manual?

If you fill a room with a bunch of car nuts, with automatic lovers on one side of the room, and manual lovers on the other, the argument about this will get quite heated.  Someone who loves a manual transmission will shout at how a manual is the vehicle that is less likely to break down, and they’d be right.  However, someone who extols the virtues of an automatic transmission would say that if you have a good car and take care of all of its components, including the transmission, an automatic transmission is extremely reliable.  They’d be right too.  So how can both be right?

Simple.  Regardless of what type of transmission you have, you have to know what to do regarding it’s maintenance.  Including if necessary, getting transmission repair in Mesa.
