No Shaking, No Shimmying:  Transmission Problems Can Be Rough

As we covered previously, your car’s transmission is a sealed system. As such, the level of transmission fluid should remain constant. If you find you are low on transmission fluid, then it’s likely that there is a leak somewhere. But before you just add transmission fluid, take it in to a transmission repair shop in Mesa to avoid other problems.

You’re driving along, and you notice that the road is very rough, or at least that’s what it feels like.  However, it might not be the road, it might be a sign of another transmission problem.  When transmissions start to wear out, they can sometimes shimmy or shake, particularly when you accelerate or slow down.  Another sign that you have transmission problems?  Your check engine light comes on.

Transmission Repair: The Check Engine Light is On

The check engine light is the most useless indicator of a problem with your vehicle. There are literally dozens of reasons why this enigmatic indicator light on your dashboard may suddenly appear. Although many drivers often ignore this warning sign for months in a row, it is not very responsible or smart to do so.  A check engine light can be something relatively simple like it’s time to change your car’s oil, or it could be something serious like a transmission breakdown.  You want to get your car or truck into a shop immediately particularly if you suspect it might be a transmission problem.  Your car or truck doesn’t have magical healing abilities.  A mechanical problem will slowly start to get worse and worse until you finally no longer have a functioning vehicle.  And let’s face it, because of the labor involved, transmission repair is not cheap.

Why does transmission repair cost so much?  Because a mechanic literally has to pull apart part of the undercarriage as well as the engine to get to your transmission.  Then he has to take apart the transmission itself, find the problem, then reassemble everything again once more.  All of this can be surprisingly easy to avoid, if you just follow the regular transmission service schedule.

So, take care of yourself.  And take care of your vehicle.  Call a transmission repair shop in Mesa.

More Reasons for Professional Transmission Repair

As we covered previously, hiring a professional to repair a faulty transmission is also more cost effective. This is attributed to the fact that the professional will only repair the areas needed to be repaired without causing further damages. However, if a person who is not a professional tries to repair a transmission, there is a high likely hood that the person will cause further damages due to lack of skills. A person without the necessary qualifications might also repair the transmission in a way that it gets damaged after a short time and therefore require to be repaired again or replaced completely. But when a professional does the repairs, there is low likely hood of the transmission experiencing further problems or the problem recurring again which means that there will be no need of replacing the transmission. Therefore, hiring a professional is cost effective since the professional will only charge for the services provided.

Hiring a professional to do transmission repair is also beneficial because the professional will provide the relevant advice on the right ways of maintaining the transmission. This is important because most transmission problems happen because of poor maintenance. When a car owner is advised on the right ways of maintaining the transmission, the life span of the transmission will be increased and therefore the damages will not be happening on regular basis. Furthermore, the professional will also answer the questions that the car owner might have.

Transmission Repair Shops and Getting Around Town

Another reason why one should hire a professional to repair a transmission problem is because some professionals provide alternative mode of transport while the transmission is being repaired. This means that the profession will give the car owner another car to use during the time the repairs will be going on. This is important especially for car owners whose cars’ transmissions break down when these car owners require traveling urgently. In such a situation one just requires to call the profession and request for an alternative transport mode as the repairs go on.

Hiring a professional for transmission repair services is also helpful because the professional can even provide additional services such as checking other parts of the vehicle. This means besides fixing the transmission, the professional can check problems with other parts of the vehicle especially those connected to the transmission. This is helpful because during the checkup the professional can identify other problems which might have affected the transmission or which might cause damages in the future. As a result, the car owner will be assured that the entire vehicle is in a good condition. Therefore, car owners can benefit a lot by hiring professionals to do transmission repair.

Scheduled Auto Repair Part 1: Transmission Service

Part one of a three part series on scheduled auto repair explores transmission service. Part two will cover differentials, and part three will cover transfer case repair.

Transmission Service:  When Should You Schedule it?

Please be aware that as a rule, when you take your car in to an auto mechanic, transmission service is  not part of  regular service.  You generally have to ask for it.  All vehicles have a timetable as to when you have to service your transmission, depending on what needs to be done.

How often you have to do transmission service depends on the make and model of your vehicle and how much you use it.  For example if you tow vehicles, or do a lot of accelerating and decelerating more than usual, you’re going to need to come in much sooner than the proverbial little old lady who drives her car once a week on her way to church.   Arizona puts unique demands on an automatic transmission.

Operating Temperatures and Transmission Repair

A vehicle’s  operating temperature also plays a role. Automatic transmission fluid that may last for over 35,000 at 100°C may only last a quarter as long at 125°C.  Considering that in June in Arizona, it can easily top 115, and your car is always hotter than the outside temperature.  A good rule of thumb is to get your car in for transmission service in Mesa every 30,000 miles.

Some automakers indicate that your transmission fluid can last 70,000 or even 100,000 with the same fluid.  It is a wise precaution however to have your transmission fluid checked when you do a scheduled auto repair such as an oil change.  Unless you have a leak, your transmission fluid should stay at the same level.  Unlike oil which is burned off bit by bit by your engine, transmission fluid doesn’t evaporate.  However, one thing an auto repair center will look for while you’re in for transmission service is transmission fluid that is burned.

However, while they’re checking the fluid, your mechanics will also be checking other things, like the gears and the casing.  All of this is part and parcel to excellent transmission service.

Transmission Repair in a Muscle Car

Monday, March 25th, 2013

Transmission repair is part of owning a car, even a high performance car like a muscle car.  First off though, what is a muscle car?  Well according to this Wikipedia article excerpt: Muscle car is a term used to refer to a variety of high-performance automobiles.[1] The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines muscle cars as “any of a group of American-made 2-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high-performance driving.” A large V8 engine is fitted in a 2-door, rear wheel drive, family-style mid-size or full-size car designed for four or more passengers. Sold at an affordable price, muscle cars are intended for mainly street use and occasional drag racing.

They are distinct from two-seat sports cars and expensive 2+2 GTs intended for high-speed touring and road racing. Developed simultaneously in their own markets, muscle cars also emerged from manufacturers in Australia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere. [READ MORE]. Wherever your car comes from, it will need to have transmission repair done, preferably in advance of any problems.

Why Would a Muscle Car Need Transmission Repair?

The reason lies in the term “high performance,” as you expect a lot more out of your muscle car than someone who just drives his car to the office every day and church on Sunday.  The last thing you want is your clutch to pop while you’re driving or experience transmission slipping.  Street drag racing is illegal in most parts of the country, however, there are places even in Arizona where you can legally race.   If nothing else, the mental picture of your car’s engine roaring should make your morning commute enjoyable.

Keep up your car proactively so it can stay high performance, and not be a clunker. Change your oil and your tires periodically, and check your belts and hoses.  Above all else, get transmission repair done as soon as you can.

Trail Transmission has been doing transmission repair for customers all over the East Valley since 1990.

Transfer Case Repair and Four Wheel Drive

Monday, March 11th, 2013

Your four-wheel drive is composed of elements.  One of the elements that is very important is your transfer case.
First off though, let’s explore what a four wheel drive is.

Four Wheel Drive and a Transfer Case

Get 4X4 Repair | Call Us Today | (480) 447-2727

According to this article excerpt:

Four wheel drive refers to vehicles that have a differential that may or may not be lockable, between the front and rear axles, meaning that the front and rear drive shafts will not rotate at different speeds. This provides maximum torque transfer to the axle with the most traction, but can cause binding in high traction, tight turning situations. They are also either full-time or part-time 4WD selectable. All wheel drive refers to a drive train system that includes a differential between the front and rear drive shafts. This is usually coupled with some sort of anti-slip technology that will allow all wheels to spin at different speeds, but still maintain the ability to transfer torque from one wheel in case of loss of traction at that wheel. All wheels are engaged to the drive full-time… [READ MORE]

In a way, a four wheel drive is kind of an additional transmission that allows you to have better control over rougher terrain.  In a place that is heavily urban, a four wheel drive goes largely unused.  In a rugged area like Arizona, however, where even now, some roads aren’t paved, a four wheel drive vehicle can be quite useful.  A system like four wheel drive also needs something to help it move power between wheels, and that is your transfer case.

A Transfer Case and it’s Repair

The transfer case transfers power from the transmission  to both the front and rear axles. Some transfer cases use  gears, but many more  transfer cases nowadays are chain driven.  Like any engine part, sooner or later you are going to need to repair it.  And make no mistake, transfer case repair is not something most people can do.

Trail Transmission is an expert in transfer case repair, as well as fixing transmissions, and rear differentials.

Auto Repair Past, Present, and Future

Monday, March 4th, 2013

Auto repair has come a long way in the past few decades, but as someone once said: “You ain’t seen nothing yet.”

Auto Mechanics and New Car Technologies

Need auto repair? | Call us Today | (480) 447-2727

Need auto repair? | Call us Today | (480) 447-2727

Auto mechanics have to be aware of emerging technologies with cars, as this Wikipedia excerpt shows:

Automobile propulsion technology under development include gasoline/electric and plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles, hydrogen cars, biofuels, and various alternative fuels. Research into future alternative forms of power include the development of fuel cells, Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI), Stirling engines,[44] and even using the stored energy of compressed air or liquid nitrogen. New materials which may replace steel car bodies include duraluminum, fiberglass, carbon fiber, and carbon nanotubes. Fully autonomous vehicles, also known as robotic cars, or driverless cars, already exist in prototype, and are expected to be commercially available around 2020. According to urban designer and futurist Michael E. Arth, driverless electric vehicles—in conjunction with the increased use of virtual reality for work, travel, and pleasure—could reduce the world’s 800 million vehicles to a fraction of that number within a few decades. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile].  Hmm, we hope that the driverless car knows when it needs transmission repair.

Transmission Repair and Today’s Car

It’s entirely possible that the car of tomorrow won’t even have a transmission, it will have some other way of shifting up or down.  However, that’s a long way off.  For now, your car either has a manual transmission or an automatic transmission.

How often do you need to fix your car?  The answer to that question depends on a lot of things.  Some cars are obviously better than others.  You don’t see a lot of Yugos around nowadays, for very good reasons.  Whatever the make and model of your car, the right auto mechanics can make all of the difference in world.

If you need transmission repair in Mesa, Trail Transmission is your auto expert.
